Professor Named 2019 Call Me MISTER Trailblazer
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – SC State professor of teacher education, Dr. Rashad Anderson, is a recipient of the 2019 Call Me MISTER Trailblazer award, granted by the nationally acclaimed, Call Me MISTER program. He was recently awarded at the program’s annual ceremony, which was held at Clemson University. The Trailblazer award is the highest award a MISTER can earn from the program.
Launched in 2000, the Call Me MISTER program is designed to provide a pipeline of highly effective African-American male teachers in public schools who serve their communities as mentors and role models. Currently, Call Me MISTER is represented at 24 colleges and universities in the state of South Carolina and has expanded to nine other states across the U.S.
Anderson, who became campus director of Call Me MISTER at SC State in 2016, has led several initiatives to advance the mission of the program by recruiting highly-skilled black male teachers and improving the public education system for all students.
Throughout his tenure, Anderson and the SC State cohort of Call Me MISTER have been at the forefront of several national conversations regarding teacher recruitment and best practices in teaching, presenting at numerous state and national conferences across the nation. Anderson and the SC State cohort have traveled to various cities, including Los Angeles, California, St. Louis, Missouri, Washington, D.C. and Houston, Texas.
A blooming author, Anderson recently published a book for educators, entitled “Wassup with All the Black Boys Sitting in the Principal’s Office.” He also leads one of the largest male summits in the state, the Brothers’ Keeper Leadership Summit, which includes annual participation of over 1,000 third through 12th grade students on SC State’s campus.
